The Brothers Seljan
Even though in the second half of the 19th century Karlovac stagnated economically, it was open for all people and ideas whose guiding star was mainly the common benefit and well-being of the city. How contagious ideas can be we find out from Mirko Seljan, an explorer of Africa and South America, who says ‘’there are habits in a person’s life which one can’t get rid of, which have the same effect on nerves as morphine on an addict and tobacco on a smoker; one of these habits is also the impulse and longing for the wide world, for discovering its distant and unknown parts’’.
