Daguerreotype
The oldest photograph in the collection of our museum was taken ten years after the invention of photography in 1839 and represents an example of the oldest photographic technique, the so called daguerreotype. Although it was not taken in Karlovac, it was part of the legacy of a family that settled here. In its early period photography did not change the genre mode representation but made it more accessible, more democratic. It took over a great deal of the former painting practice: portraying was no longer time-consuming and became cheaper, city veduta became more versatile, and the Veristic taste was better satisfied.
