Singing for The Homeland

Thanks to the various cultural societies, a new model of cultural life, in the broadest meaning of the word, was established in the 19th century – a model which along with some changes has persevered even today. Nowadays, a great deal of what cultural societies did before is carried out by various institutions and the city services; we’ve already discovered that by drafting the road from the Illyrian Reading Society to the City Library. The year 1858 was decisive not only for the city’s musical life, but also for other performing arts.
