Apprenticeship and journey books
How could one become a master craftsman? First one started as an apprentice and then continued as a journeyman.
Apprenticeship usually lasted from three to five years; after that apprentices became journeymen, who were in fact assistants. They would receive a certificate of apprenticeship from their master – a document of successful handicraft completion – which was elaborately decorated, for example with the veduta of the city where it was issued, with an image of the products and tools the particular handicraft used, and verified by the respective guild’s stamp.
