Josip Šipuš on the impact of trade on agriculture
The first Croatian writer of political economy was born in Karlovac, shotly after 1770; he published his work The Basis of Grain Trade in 1796. As a young man he studied in Pest and in Gottingen and he had a good knowledge of French, German and English literature; he published his work exactly 20 years after the Scot Adam Smith, author of the well-known The Wealth of Nations.
Šipuš did not doubt it was the grain trader who was the actual ’’engine'’ in the grain economy of his time, to the benefit of all its participants - the peasants, the nobility and the rulers.
