From the 18th until the first half of the 19th century, Karlovac was a strong and important trade and transit centre, situated at the junction of river and land routes. The north and the sea to the east were connected through the Danube, the rivers Sava and Kupa as well as the Karolina, Jozefina and Lujzijana roads. Trade towards the sea developed through the local artisan, grain and timber products, whille at the same time the interier was supplied with overseas goods. The economic boom led to changes both in the economic and social structure of the population. Wealthy traders, transporters and craftsmen resided here creating the new middle class.
