Style and everyday life
The furniture set of 1824 made by Johan Kraft stands out as an example of excellent Biedermeier work from the domestic environment. In terms of style it is also a transition from the time of classicism and baroque, and then again, even the modern viewer can easily accept the practical and functional ideas of that time. Quite often we hear visitors commenting that this furniture set would look great even today in their homes, the only thing is that, judging by the size of the furniture, our predecessors were mainly of a smaller physique!
The ornate salon mirror dating from the 1880s is one of the items considered by 20th century modernists invidious, as a symptom of the unauthentic petty bourgeois spirit which refers to styles of the past. Nevertheless, for its time this is a good quality product, and even today a touch of neo-baroque extravagance is part of the modern furniture industry’s repertoire, regardless of what we think about it.
