Vjekoslav Karas
During his life time Vjekoslav Karas was already proclaimed ‘’the first Illyrian painter’’ as he is the first Croatian painter from the northern areas to be educated in Italy, with the help of supporters of the revival ideas which he adopted himself. His opus reflects the very beginning of the newer Croatian painting, but due to the milieu’s negligence after the political breakdown of 1848 it is not entirely familiar to us and many attribution problems have not yet been solved. The Karlovac City Museum has 9 of his original paintings.
