Even though thanks to the grain trade lots of money flowed into Karlovac, the first generation of citizens who had it at their disposal did not change their housing and clothing styles significantly. Right up until the 1840s their habits were quite modest – this is at least what our renowned fellow citizen Imbro Tkalac seems to think judging by what is recorded in his memories of his younger years written some fifty years later. In any case, the 19th century is the century of the new civil-capitalist society and its corresponding lifestyle whose stage was the fast-growing cities.
