The Mažuranić family In Karlovac

The museum testimonials related to important historical persons often originate from family heritage. The politician and writer Ivan Mažuranić wrote his famous epic The Death of Smail Aga Čengić in Karlovac; it was published in 1846. At that time the future Croatian ban worked for the city administration.

His grand grandson Vladimir Mažuranić donated a pair of boots to our museum which, according to the family, belonged to Ivan during his Karlovac years. Mažuranić was called ban of the people as he was the first of plebeian background to hold the highest political office in Croatia.
