The Royal portrait
Very few documents have been preserved from the public areas of Karlovac; we'll stop by Maria Therese’s portrait which probably decorated a civil or a military office. Such portraits were made after samples, often graphical, by some of the specially authorized painting workshops.
The Karlovac portrait was painted by an unknown baroque artist, who tried to portray the royal dignity using the classical imposition of the character’s pale-complexion, the gold thread brocade dress, transparent lace and shiny pearls, all against a dark red background. This was only partially achieved; despite that, his work suits the provincial milieu of Karlovac.
