A free and royal town
The economic gain and political changes grew ripe simultaneously. In 1781 during the reign of Joseph II, whose initials are written in the centre of the city’s coat of arms, Karlovac was granted the status of a Free Royal City (Royal Borough). The selected documents displayed in the showcases in front of you give us an insight into the work of the city authorities: a copy of the statute, a tax payers’ register book, land registry documents, certificates of nationality, travel and personal documents.
