Karlovac at a crossroad
After the peace Treaty of Karlowitz signed in Sremski Karlovci in 1699, the border between the Habsburg and the Ottoman empires moved to the east of the river Korana thus opening new trade routes. These circumstances were quite favourable for Karlovac. From a fortress at a border it became a town at the crossroad of river and road networks. Not even a hundred kilometres separated the port of Karlovac at Kupa from the sea ports of Rijeka, Bakar and Senj; moreover, for the standards of those days, very good quality roads connected them.
