In the town-fortress
We would like to point out that the displayed model, the work of Davorin Derde, shows the town ramparts significantly lower than they actually were, while the accent is on the formation of the civic layer (urban tissue?) within the bastion system and in the suburb along the banks of the river Kupa. Of course, this a Karlovac in wich urban life is already well developed, enforced by crafts and trade.
A good insight into the population’s occupations of 1770 can be gained from the cadastral plan, a replica of which we have displayed here. We come across Croatian, Slovenian and German surnames and it seems possible to obtain in the town anything that would seem necessary for a decent living!
