Vojna krajina
To provide protection against the Turks, a defence belt – cordon sanitaire was organized as early as the 15th century which was later called Vojna Krajina (Military Frontier). In the 16th century, its commander in chief, Ivan Lenković implemented a reform. The area was divided into two parts: Hrvatska krajina (Croatian Frontier), later on better known as the Generalate of Karlovac and Gornjoslavonska krajina (Upper Slavonian Frontier), that is the Generalate of Varaždin.
