At The Karlovac building site

The construction of the new fortress, called Carlstadt after the Grand Duke Karlo Habsburg, began on 13th July 1579, which was recorded on the fortress’s first plan. This date is also considered the birthday of the town. Over a thousand workers were involved in the construction while soldiers protected them from possible Turkish attacks.
