At the border of two kingdoms
We have already talked about some of the circumstances surrounding the building of Karlovac and about its historical shape. Here we should point out once more its importance for the defence of Europe at that time, within the belt called by popes and kings the Bulwark of Christianity.
After the great victory of the so called Holy League in the naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the Ottoman army resorted entirely to land roads. In the following twenty years or so, these roads saw the construction of Europe’s largest fortresses of the time, in reality these were fortress-cities: Karlovac at the confluence of the rivers Kupa and Korana ….
