The old sea and the ancient ocean
The geological map of the Karlovac region shows great complexity and in terms of geological time, which is measured in hundreds of millions of years, what we notice as a meeting point between the Dinaric and Pannonian areas, is revealed as tectonic plate boundary. There are mainly young rocks to the southeast of the Karlovac area, which came into being in the Neogene Pannonian Sea surrounding; the rest of the area is older as it was formed by sedimentation processes in the ancient ocean, also called the Tethys Ocean.
