What is the shape of historical Karlovac?
The rectangular system of streets, squares and city blocks was encompassed by ramparts and bastions which form the points of the six-pointed star. The bastions were the most heavily defended positions where the artillery was situated. Deep ditches (moats) which could be filled with water from the rivers Kupa and Korana followed the same shape, while wooden bridges over them led to the two city gates, located on the route of today's Radićeva and Miškinova streets. The city gates could be protected by artillery fire from the bastions. The entire bastion system was made of soil since its softness resisted well the enemy's artillery assaults.
